Romancing the Red Planet

We Earthlings have a definite love affair with space. There’s no doubt about it. For thousands of years, we have probed the night sky, always searching and reaching for the stars. Our telescopes and mathematics gives us a wide array of understanding at how the universe works.

But it’s the guy next door that really captures our interest.

Who can resist that red brownish tan or those murky clouds? He’s smaller than us with a really thin layer of atmosphere but we have never let a little thing like that bother us. After all, interesting things come in small packages. For a long time, he gave us the slip, shining like a flare in the black of space at different times through the years. He’d get close enough for us to say hello but then move away again.

Just like a planet to get all elusive on us.

We Earthlings are an aggressive bunch so we made it our business to get to know him. In the 19th century, we made a breakthrough. We looked in our telescopes, peeked through the window. And what we saw has made us giddy for the past hundred years or so. Finally, we get to see what this planet’s all about…or have we?

Join me as we discuss our love affair with Mars with my guest co-host and contributor, Douglas Woodward, author of the The Lying Wonders of Mars. You can call in at 646-595-2083, press 1 to be live on air. Or download the WLUV Radio mobile app today. Any way you can, join us.
