Spellbound: Paranormal Seduction

About three or four years ago, my husband took up an occupation I didn’t know anything about until I happened to over hear him one night on the phone.  He started ghost hunting.  I remember he used to spend time with a friend of his and they would come back late but I simply thought they were hanging out at said friend’s house. What a surprise it was to me to discover the only houses they were hanging out at were places reported to have weird sightings.

In this divinely-led moment of discovery, I overheard my husband say something to the effect, “You made it mad.” I wasn’t sure how I picked up the signal from that single sentence but it all became clear to me. I listened as he started to talk more and more about plans for tomorrow evening and the like. They were going to travel to ‘a red barn’ and ‘take the equipment’ with them. Without going into too much detail, my husband never went ghost-hunting again.

When I asked him why he even wanted to do such a thing he said, “You hear about all this stuff time. I just wanted to see if they were true.”

That single statement leads me to the point about how spellbound we are by the paranormal. The unexplainable, the mysterious, the peripheral of our imaginations and spiritual. It is seductive. In an effort to probe deeper into the fascination of the paranormal, some may be lured into occultic or occultic-like practices to understand.

However, as Christians, should we be easily swayed by these happenings? What context should we view ‘the things that go bump in the night’? How best are we to ascertain what level of involvement we should have in them?

As adults, we can be lured by these things but how do they affect our children? With movies, games, books, and TV shows being presented to our children with greater ease and intensity, we need to study how this underlying occultic lures reel in and affect our children.

Join me as we talk about this issue with Marcia Montenegro. She is the author of the book Spellbound: The Paranormal Seduction of Today’s Kids. The book’s information comes from Marcia’s many years of participation in New Age, Eastern, and occult beliefs; her practice as a professional astrologer for 8 of those years, including teaching astrology; extensive reading and research of New Age and occult materials; and experiences and contacts she had in the New Age/occult community for over 15 years. Additionally, since becoming a Christian, Marcia’s knowledge in these areas has been supplemented by her contacts, reading, and research through her ministry, CANA/Christian Answers for the New Age.
